Sorry to dig this up, but I just found this thread. Most everything has already been covered, but I just thought that I would humbly submit a link to a piece I wrote on this same topic. Here's *my* list of ten free apps for OS X.

Wow! Impressive work from Adobe.

You know, I was around in the mid-80s when the mouse and GUI first hit the market, and I recall the bickering amongst my fellow computer geeks about whether one could do real work with these new "toy" computers (which didn't phase me as I was also interested in desktop publishing and could sense where it was going.) Back then, there were merits to both sides of that debate, but over time, it's become clear that the mouse+GUI was far more powerful and flexible than at first perceived by the geek crowd.

I'm starting to see a lot of parallels between the touch interface devices and those days in the 80s. Every time I see/hear some geek declare the iPad a toy and useless for real work, I just think back to those days when my geek friends sneered at the Macs with the silly mouse and pretty GUI and wonder if history is repeating itself.

And then I see things like what Adobe is doing and I know it for a fact. We're seeing another revolution in computing happen, but most people won't acknowledge it for many years, until it's beyond obvious.

We iPhone and 3G iPad owners are plenty upset by this as well.

Well, to be fair, you express hate toward Apple constantly. And given the conspiracy ideas in your signature, you are plenty upset about lots of things in your life. So I would hardly consider you a typical case. Apple could offer free computers tomorrow and you'd instantly post a message expressing your hatred of Apple for doing that.

I don't hate Apple, just many of the things they do. Most Apple products I love.

What's funny is that there is tons of money to be made in enterprise hardware, software, and support. The problem is that it requires two things - long term support and road maps. It is completely against Apple's culture to provide either of those, thus they will always be horrible in the enterprise.

If anything I'm seeing that this will push resale value of iPhones up.

Of course it sucks, but I don't upgrade early so unless they increase the non early upgrade costs this won't apply to a lot of us.

Sweet. But, there's more to just piggybacking on your mac's airport connection to make calls. I think more has to be done to make this networking possible.

There are already wi-fi enabled phones that can make Skype calls if you have a wi-fi connection. This is nothing new or groundbreaking.

Well this certainly beats that ipod integration nonsense. MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen, I'd rather see great communication device that take how the user communicates to the next level, not just stuff a music player in it.

MP3 player phones are a dime a dozen and also *hugely* popular. Look at how well the LG Chocolate is doing with their craptacular phone. The iPhone *must* have iPod integration to be a success, IMO. At minimum it must have seamless iPod integration and a decent-to-good phone experience. Everything else is gravy.

Many manufacturers already do this with their unlocked phones - but they just store the settings on the phones (no need to connect to a computer).
Manufacturers selling unlocked phones is common elsewhere and is now already beginning in the States.
This won't fly - usage is terrible and would make dialing slower than it currently is. And texting would truly suck.

In fact, Sony launched their w800i phone unlocked in the U.S. (was only availalbe from the Sony Style store). The thing is, at $500 it was extremely cost-prohibitive and definitely aimed at technology early adopters. I'm sorry, but phones are just too darn expensive at full retail price. Apple *needs* the subsidy for signing a new contract. That's the only thing that will make the price competitive for the mass market. I expect Apple will partner with T-Mobile and/or Cingular, and that the phone will be available for no more than $300 with new contract (and even that is expensive by today's standards).

Do you mean latency? evdo gives up to 3mbps in urban areas. That should be plenty.

EV-DO is not available on GSM networks in the US. As far as I know the GSM providers (basically T-Mobile and Cingular) are using HSDPA for their 3G network. And everything I've heard about it has been good. The early reports on the Cingular 3G network are that it's quite zippy and handles streaming video just fine...

I also like the idea of using the click wheel to make a retro style digital-rotary phone. However, I doubt Apple would just display the numbers on the screen and not on the unit. So when in dial mode, you would spin the click wheel and the numbers, displayed on the display in a circle, would highlight the number that you were on and then click the center button on the click wheel to select. If you wanted to get really old school, you could have the rotary sounds come through the headphones. Or course you would still be able to dial by your address book or search through a downloaded version of the white or yellow pages (which would naturally sync into your phone whenever you charge it at home, via blue tooth or direct connection to your computer).

Text messaging is extremely popular and I just don't see Apple crippling text messaging on the iPhone. Can you see inputting a 120-character text message on a "rotary-style" interface? Yeah, I can't either. Any kind of rotary interface on the iPhone is a non-starter idea, IMO.

P.S. The title of this thread is: "iChat Phone from Apple?". Kind of implies that there must be as simple, fast way to input text, right? I'm thinking a full qwerty keyboard is a definite possibility...

I see you still haven't had the common decency to TIMG tag your charts. As for debate with you? Why bother, it's the same thing every day with you. You just copy and paste the same things.

Unless you're working on a tiny laptop screen the images do not extend past the normal width of the forum. Relax yourself and realize that the images are very easy to read, very adequately sized, and focus on the content of the thread. If they were all TIMG'd then everyone would have to click on each individual image to actually consume the content of the chart. Furthermore, knowing you, if I had TIMG'd them, you'd probably be complaining that you can't read the fine-print anymore and that I was somehow attempting to be misleading by not making the fine-print visible enough for you to analyze.

The trouble is in true authoritarian style you present charts from various right wing/big business sources (complete with oversize type and charts, which as you know is the equivalent of shouting, not the best way to start a discussion) and present them as "truth" thereby establishing your own rules,no room for any debate on options. What the U.S. is going through is "end of empire" get used to it and adapt or die.

Right wing big business sources like the Congressional Budget Office, the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Census Bureau? (all sited as sources in the fine-print of the graphs) Puh-lease! If you think the charts are wrong, which exact components are wrong? Can you post the right graph? And where will those graphs get their data from which you consider to be more reliable than the organizations I listed above? Talk about a straw man. You're willingly ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn't exist because if it's real... then common sense would dictate that we have to make cuts to the welfare/entitlement programs you hold so dear.

And in the 14,298 other threads in which people have brought up OTHER solutions to reduce deficit/debt, you pull the same crap. So don't start with that. You are one of the biggest pots in a sea of black kettles.

Unless the solution is cutting SS, Medicare, or Medicaid, or any myriad of programs that actually help people, you and your ilk want nothing of it. You want more cut taxes for wealthy and less tax and regulation on business. Period. To you, that is the ONLY way to move forward.

It's understandable that rich people don't want programs that help people, because they themselves don't need help. Hopefully, you don't plan on needing Social Security or Medicare/Medicaid when you are older, and i'm sure your parents are good without it either. If they need assistance, you will cover them, I'm sure.

I know you WANT to give your solution... you're so close... c'mon... say it: "I think we should drastically increase taxation on wealthy Americans to fix this problem."
What I want to know is how exactly you expect businesses to grow jobs, expand operations, etc. in this type of situation. It seems fairly clear based on the facts that A) this wouldn't be near enough money to solve the problem B)that the end result in the long run will almost certainly be less growth, fewer jobs, and less government 'revenue' than before. C) that you'd kill what chance we have left at regaining a strong economy as large businesses would do whatever they could to get their assets in locations of lower tax burden.

Does anybody know of a piece of music i could use for my slideshow?

The sideshow contains picture of a camping trip in the summer holidays.

For me, Holiday Road from National Lampoon's Vacation is the quintessential road trip song, but I don't know if that works for your slides.

The embargo was in response to japanese military invasions in asia and its alliance with nazi germany.

In other words, it qualified as an act of aggression of sorts. Roosevelt knew exactly what he was doing, and the America Firsters were opposed to it, but he got it through.

Americans are stunningly uninformed on 1949-41, it is a period that is a huge blank in history books. Much easier to tell the story of Pearl Harbor and ignore the back-story. Ignore the fact that if America had had a little testicular fortitude in those earlier years, millions of people probably would not have died. But at least we got Casablanca, Saving Private Ryan and Pink Floyd's the Wall.

sad that old people dont want their children having sex when they are both old enough, or sad that those two are haveing sex?

Both. I won't pass judgement or defend that because the gov't sees someones as an adult that they are wise enough to make responsible decisions. What I personally think could matter less.

Simply put, he might be an adult, great, but if you live under my roof and I don't want you to do something you will not do it, or you will leave. Your an adult right? So provide for yourself.

A person can be old in age and have no wisdom. And I haven't heard of any wise young men, but I do know a few old wise men.
